MOREE will continue its tradition of bringing the entire community together during NAIDOC Week with Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall announcing a $3,000 grant from the State Government to support Miyay Birray Youth Service to host a series of cultural events.
Mr Marshall said Moree was a shining example of what a community could do when it comes together to celebrate reconciliation.
“NAIDOC Week is an important opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the tremendous achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people here in the Moree Plains Shire and right across the Northern Tablelands,” Mr Marshall said.
“This week Miyay Birray Youth Service will host 20 different events, which all focus on inclusiveness and bringing together all community members, both indigenous and non-indigenous.
“Acknowledging and celebrating history and culture is at the cornerstone of NAIDOC Week each year and I encourage everyone to consider attending and participating in local events.”
NAIDOC is a nationally celebrated week dedicated to recognising and sharing the rich and diverse culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians and the contribution they have and continue to make to our society.
Mr Marshall said it was important that the government supported local NAIDOC Week activities and he was pleased to help secure the funding.
“The state government is supporting a number of councils and groups across our region host events this week,” he said.
“We are so lucky to live in such a culturally diverse region and I encourage locals to get out this week and enjoy vibrant celebrations of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.”
