MORE HELP FOR FAMILIES TO PAY RISING ENERGY BILLS

Thursday, 1 June 2017

MEMBER for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall today announced extra NSW Government support to assist local families and individuals in getting their utility bills under control.

Mr Marshall said those facing financial difficulty could access $50 emergency vouchers through the NSW Government’s Energy Accounts Payment Assistance Scheme to make coping with bills a little easier.

“Electricity bills can be a shock to the household budget – but this scheme can help local people stay out of debt and better manage their finances,” Mr Marshall said.

“This service is administered through local community and not-for-profit groups. In addition to their valuable advice, they can provide vouchers of $50. Energy retailers are then required to accept the vouchers, and credit the full value to your bill.

“From July 1, the scheme will be administered online, making it faster and easier than ever to get your financial situation under control, and avoid the unenviable outcome of getting a utility disconnected.”

“In addition to seeking assistance through this scheme, I’d also urge those in financial difficulty to contact their utility provider and ask for long-term repayment options. All retailers must have options for those experiencing financial hardship – whether it’s regular repayments or a fee-free exit.”

The government’s EAPA Scheme has helped more than 55,000 people experiencing short-term financial crisis or a disaster in only one year.

Almost $12 million in vouchers has been issued through accredited welfare organisations. 342 community welfare organisations across NSW are now accredited and able to implement the rebate program.
