NEW PHONICS RESOURCE TO IMPROVE READING SKILLS

MEMBER for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall has welcomed the release of a new guide which will assist teachers in using phonics to develop the reading skills of students.

Mr Marshall said the Education Minister Adrian Piccoli had launched the Phonics Guide which is part of a series of NSW Government initiatives to improve student outcomes through Great Teaching, Inspired Learning.

“The guide complements a requirement for teacher education courses to provide comprehensive phonics instruction,” Mr Marshall said.

“We know through research that teaching students the relationship between sounds and spelling patterns is crucial to the teaching of reading and the NSW Government’s commitment to providing teachers with necessary resources.

“The State Government wants all teachers to use phonics and this guide provides every teacher in NSW with the skills and tools they need,” he said.

Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards President Tom Alegounarias said the ability to use phonics is essential when developing reading skills in students.

“The guide has been developed to assist teachers new to the profession, as well as those with extensive classroom experience,” he said.

The Phonics Guide is available from the BOSTES ebos online shop.
