SEARCH FOR YEAR 6 STUDENTS WHO FOLLOW FRED HOLLOWS’ PHILOSOPHY

MEMBER for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall has announced that nominations are now open for the first Fred Hollows Humanity Award in NSW.

Mr Marshall said that Professor Fred Hollows dedicated his life to helping others, saving the sight of disadvantaged people around the world.

“The Fred Hollows Foundation is keeping Fred’s vision alive through an award which recognises Year 6 students who follow in Fred’s footsteps by showing care and compassion for others,” Mr Marshall said.

“There is no act of kindness too small. Whether it is volunteering, fundraising for a good cause or helping others, children across the Northern Tablelands are making a positive difference in our community. This award is a great opportunity for their work to be recognised.

“The Award has been held previously in the ACT, but this is the first time it is being awarded in NSW and I am confident there is a child in our area deserving of the honour.

“Last year’s entries in the ACT included a student who took it upon himself to raise money for New South Wales farmers effected by drought and a student who completed the ACT Wildlife Courses to gain a license for caring for sick and injured wildlife.”

The Foundation is pleased to have support for the award from Premier Mike Baird.

“Fred Hollows’ trademark was his compassion and I can think of no better way to continue his legacy than to encourage kindness,” Mr Baird said.

“The Fred Hollows Humanity Award is a wonderful way to reward our young people for taking the time out for others.”

All nominees will be invited to a presentation ceremony to announce the NSW winner. Thanks to sponsor Thomas Sabo Sterling Silver, the winner will be able to extend their humanity by allocating $2,500 to one of The Fred Hollows Foundation’s programs to end avoidable blindness.

“I urge parents, teachers and other community members to nominate Year 6 students in the area and showcase the community spirit of our region,” Mr Marshall said.
