ONE of the best-loved routes for grey nomads travelling the North West will soon be made safer with Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall announcing the commencement of $1.15 million in State Government funded road improvements to the Fossickers Way, north of Bingara.

Mr Marshall said with traffic at a minimum during COVID-19 now was the perfect time to get this project underway.

“Fossickers Way offers an historic and scenic alternative to the New England and Newell highways and this work will ensure the route continues to service the community for years to come,” Mr Marshall said.

“Gwydir Shire Council is carrying out the work on behalf of the government, which will see 1.3 kilometres of road, about 17 kilometres north of Bingara, widened and improvements made to the drainage and road resurfacing.

“It’s really important we have major infrastructure projects like this continuing during this difficult time.

“Not only does it ensure vital employment for local people but it means an important link in the freight network is improved to allow the smooth flow of produce and commerce once the economy fires back up.

“Work last week and is expected to be completed by the end of June, hopefully in time for when people are once again allowed to travel without restrictions throughout our beautiful region.

Work will be carried out by council from 7am to 6pm on weekdays and from 8am to 1pm on Saturdays, weather permitting.

Traffic will be reduced to one lane, alternate flow, with traffic control and a reduced speed limit in place for the safety of workers and road users.

Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions and follow the directions of signs and traffic control and adhere to the posted speed limits.
