GOLF at Guyra will soon be a sport for all conditions, with Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall today announcing a $15,000 State Government grant to assist with constructing two practice driving nets at Guyra Bowling and Recreation Club.
Mr Marshall said the new facilities would give those without enough time for 18 holes a reason to drag out the clubs.
“Driving nets are a staple at most modern golf clubs, providing somewhere for players to practice their swing after work or warm-up ahead of comp day,” Mr Marshall said.
“The committee at Guyra has been looking for ways to boost interest in the golf club, believing nets will make the sport accessible to people of varying skill levels.
“At Guyra, where the weather can often make the green too wet to play, the driving nets will offer an all-weather option for those keen golfers who can’t wait for the fairways to dry-off.
“This a prime example of a local sporting organisation looking for new ways to remove the ‘handicaps’ which are stifling its financial viability.”
Guyra Bowling and Recreation Club President David Wilcox said the driving nets would form part of the strategy to increase the number of playing members.
“We have been trying to brain-storm ways to encourage more golfers, particularly juniors, onto the course,” Mr Wilcox said.
“While the local schools will be able to use the nets, we also hope to be able to introduce golf to the international staff at Costa’s tomato farm.
“The golf nets will provide an area for members and all the community to use and hopefully encourage people to play sport.
“I would like to thank Adam and the State Government for their continued support of our club – without their help we would not be able to provide the facilities we have for a small country community.”
