$27,265 TO UPGRADE GLEN INNES SHOWGROUND BUILDINGS

THE Glen Innes Showground Trust has received a $27,265 grant through the NSW Government’s Public Reserve Management Fund to replace the northern exterior wall of the old pavilion and renew the roof on the caretaker’s cottage, Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall announced yesterday.

Mr Marshall was in Glen Innes yesterday and met with Showground Trust members to deliver the good news and inspect the old pavilion and cottage. The MP said he was pleased to be able to support the Trust’s application and pleased to see funding go to such an important asset in the Glen Innes community.

“While day-to-day maintenance expenses of the showground are covered by money raised at the show and various community events, major improvements can only occur when government gets involved and offers some financial support,” Mr Marshall said.

“The iconic Glen Innes Showground has wonderful facilities and historic buildings and it’s so important the NSW Government continue to support the trust in their efforts to maintain them.

“$10,000 of this grant will allow the Trust to replace the timber cladding on the northern exterior wall of the old pavilion.

“It was the showground’s first pavilion and built in 1894 so the walls will be replaced with hardwood cladding to maintain the historical integrity of the building.

“In 1924 an extension was added but it wasn’t until the 1980’s that they had to start doing some repairs on the building. It was restumped then and in the past five or 6 years, the trust has replaced the iron cladding on the western and southern sides; the interior has recently been painted by work-for-the-dole participants and quite a few windows have been replaced.

“The roof on the caretaker’s cottage has been a problem for the trust for a very long time so I’m delighted to see they will now be able to fix it properly.”

Showground Trust secretary Patric Millar said Trust members were very appreciative of the government funding and thanked Mr Marshall for his support of the application.

“The old pavilion was built 120 years ago and we keen to make sure it lasts another 120 years,” Mr Millar said.

“The caretaker’s cottage has leaked like a sieve for a very long time. The roof has all these different pitches and has been a constant problem for us, we’ve spent a lot of time patching it up so we are delighted the job can now be done properly.

“As always, we’re certainly very grateful for this funding and Adam’s interest and assistance.”
