AFTER a long day on the golf course or the bowling green, local sports lovers will retire in comfort to the newly refurbished Warialda Golf and Bowling Club, with Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall last Friday night joining Club Chairman Matthew Williams to officially open the $315,000 State Government-funded clubhouse upgrade.

The project was funded last year through the State Government’s Drought Support Package. Gwydir Shire Council also provided $15,000 for the upgrade.

Mr Marshall said the refurbishment would assist to support the club’s future economic viability.

“Without a doubt, the work undertaken by contractor Meader Construction has brightened the club and made it into a vibrant and modern sport and function facility,” Mr Marshall said.

“The last five years have been incredibly tough financially for small volunteer run clubs, with the drought drying up household incomes which would normally be spent on playing sport, memberships or going out for a meal.

“Through these significant improvements the club is ready to take advantage of reduced COVID-19 restrictions and no lockdowns.

“The new industrial kitchen with modern gas cooktops and stainless steel benches will accommodate functions like birthdays and community celebrations, while continuing to support Charlie’s Kitchen – the local delicious Chinese restaurant.

“The family friendly atmosphere has been enhanced with the inclusion of a children’s play area, while the existing men’s and women’s amenities have been modernised to increase accessibility.

“Modifications have also allowed for the creation of a new board room and additional storage space.

“I congratulate the board and Gwydir Shire Council for taking this proactive step towards securing the long-term financial viability of the club.

“I encourage the Warialda community to formalise their memberships, support the club and work to ensure it remains a vibrant part of the Gwydir Shire.”
