MOREE’S underutilised Mehi River area will become a thriving waterside retreat, with the NSW Government investing $402,554 to rejuvenate the green corridor and attract visitors.

Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall was in Moree last Friday and announced the major rejuvenation project with Moree Plains Shire Council Mayor Katrina Humphries on the banks of the Mehi, describing the area as a “perfect getaway” from the town’s summer heat.

“During the warmer months, the Mehi River is an excellent place to take a break and appreciate a cooler breeze, but the surrounding area and does little to encourage locals to and tourist to the river,” Mr Marshall said.

“This project will give locals even more reasons to take a break by the riverside, building new benches and picnic tables, drinking fountains and a barbecue, as well as new exercise equipment and street art.

“Travellers will also make the most of the Mehi River’s excellent highway position, with sealed access and parking for RV’s and caravans, while cyclists will appreciate the new shared pathways.

“The ‘Magic Mehi’ is Moree’s most recognisable natural asset, and this major rejuvenation will help attract visitors to an incredible spot that is just a stones’ throw from town.”

The project is being led by Moree Plains Shire Council in collaboration with the local Chamber of Commerce.

“The benefits of having an accessible, free, safe and healthy place to relax in the centre of Moree cannot be understated,” Mr Marshall said.

“This project is expected to boost rates of passive recreation in town, increasing fitness and health outcomes while fostering a strong sense of pride in the local community.

“With funding now locked in, council is raring to go, with construction scheduled to start in the coming weeks and a grand opening planned for mid-next year.

“I can’t wait to join the Moree community by the banks of the ‘Magic Mehi’, and we won’t have long to wait.”

Mr Marshall said the project funding had come from the NSW Government’s Regional Growth Fund, a $1.3 billion fund to build infrastructure that improves the lifestyle of people living in country NSW.

“This second life for the Mehi River is just one of several projects the Moree Plains Shire can look forward to as a result of this fund,” Mr Marshall said.

“With $1.64 million now available in the second round of the Stronger Country Communities Fund, I look forward to seeing the incredible projects that could soon revolutionise other areas of the Shire.”
