Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall has announced the $4.9 million Wallon Creek Bridge upgrade will start next week.

A NEW sidetrack will allow traffic to continue flowing along the Newell Highway, north of Moree, with Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall today announcing the $4.9 million project to strengthen the Wallon Creek Bridge would start next week.
Mr Marshall said the project would deliver safer, more efficient and reliable journeys along the Newell Highway.
“This is an important crossing for local motorists and a growing number of heavy vehicles and this work will ensure the bridge is capable of withstanding that load for years to come,” Mr Marshall said.
“The existing bridge will be strengthened with 36 steel piles, to allow for heavier vehicles and all-weather access.
“To minimise disruption to the 2,500 vehicles that use this section of Newell Highway each day, a dedicated sidetrack has been built to divert traffic while we carry out strengthening work on the bridge.
“There are also significant economic benefits for the Moree Plains Shire economy, with 20 jobs being created as part of this work, as well as strengthening this key freight and tourist route.”
Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said Wallon Creek Bridge had served the community and freight industry well since it was built in 1967, but needs reinforcing after years of enduring droughts and heavy rainfall.
“This is about getting on with the job of delivering game-changing road infrastructure projects while keeping communities connected and freight moving,” Mr Toole said.
“We want to be absolutely certain this bridge is able to cope with both current and future traffic, as well as any inclement weather events.
“The improvements we’re making will keep the bridge safe for road users for years to come and I’d like to thank both motorists and locals for their patience while this important work is carried out.
“This work is on top of the State Government’s $700 million investment into upgrading the Newell Highway to improve connectivity and safety along this key freight route.”
Contractor Abergeldie will partner with Transport for NSW to deliver the project.
The sidetrack opened to traffic today (Wednesday, 1 September), with the bridge strengthening work to start on Thursday, 9 September. Work will be carried out from Monday to Saturday between 7am and 6pm, weather permitting.
