WORK about to take place on the 99-year-old Myall Creek Memorial Hall will improve access for people with restricted mobility, with Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall today announcing a $26,761 State Government grant to install a new amenities block.
Mr Marshall said while expectations around accessible amenities might have changed over the years public, the use of Myall Creek Hall has remained the same.
“In 1923 when the hall was officially opened, the Inverell Times reported that more than 400 people from across the district turned out for a night of dance and celebration,” Mr Marshall said.
“Almost a century on the facility remains a thriving community meeting place, with a number of the groups originally involved in establishing the building, like the Country Women’s Associations, still regular users.
“To ensure the hall meets modern standards a wheelchair accessible public amenity block will be built, and a concrete path will be laid under an existing verandah to allow all-weather access.
“Having a level walkway with handrails and adequate room will reduce the risk of injury, in particular for elderly users.
“This project ensures the hall continues to cater for the evolving needs of the Myall Creek Community.”
Myall Creek Recreation Reserve Secretary/Treasurer Graeme Newnham said the hall was a meeting place for many young families in the district.
“Whether it’s training for the Rural Fire Service or engaging with the work of Local Land Services, the Myall Creek Hall is always a hive of activity,” Mr Newnham said.
“Through the year eight individual groups hire the hall and grounds for events. The construction of the wheelchair accessible amenity and the concrete path is paramount to maintaining safety and their continued use of the building.
“We are very pleased to have been granted the funding to allow the necessary upgrades required to benefit of our community.”
