YOUNG people in the Inverell district can look forward to a fun-filled and exciting 2018, with the NSW Government partnering with Inverell Shire Council to keep local kids active and entertained throughout the school holidays this year.
Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall joined Inverell Shire Mayor Paul Harmon to announce $50,000 in funding from the government to support the town’s calendar of events for youth this year, featuring a smorgasbord of sports, art and learning opportunities that will keep youngsters engaged and happy.
“Whether you enjoy building computers or kayak touring the Sapphire City’s blue waters of Lake Inverell, there will be fun for everyone at Inverell during school holidays this year,” Mr Marshall said.
“Council has teamed up with a host of different event providers from volunteer groups, Inverell Family and Youth Support Services to local businesses to run loads of activities.
“These events have been picked to ensure children will remain active throughout the school holidays, keeping fit, learning and offering pathways to employment at the same time.”
This year’s events begin in March and include:
• Careers and Life Choices Expo at Inverell Town Hall for high school students throughout the Northern Tablelands;
• Eco-adventure paddling tours during school holidays;
• School holiday contemporary art classes;
• Skateboarding workshops;
• Outdoor movie nights in three shire villages;
• Computer building workshops;
• Inflatable ‘Obstacool’ challenge; and
• First Aid training workshops.
Cr Harmon said the programs would reach more than 1,500 young people across the Inverell district.
“Council recognises our young people are a tremendous asset and we’re delighted to be offering a wide range of free events and skill building sessions,” Cr Harmon said.
“This funding will be used to drive an action-packed calendar of events around the Shire including workshops in 3D animation, skateboard sessions, a ‘Glow Hard’ colour run and modern art classes.
“We will be working with local schools and organisations such as Pathfinders to schedule events, with the full program to be unveiled early this year.”
