NORTHERN Tablelands MP Adam Marshall has today put the call out for nominations for the NSW Blue Plaques Program, with members of the public invited to nominate local places and personalities that deserve to have their heritage value recognised.
The NSW Blue Plaques Program is modelled on a similar initiative in the United Kingdom, and will showcase key heritage sites.
“In our part of the world it is pretty easy to talk until you are blue in the face about all the incredible people and places that have contributed to our state and national identity,” Mr Marshall said.
“I am asking everyone to think of the places in their community that have an important story attached to them and submit those suggestions to my office to be nominated for a Blue Plaque.
“Examples might be the Uralla Courthouse where Bushranger Captain Thunderbolt’s body was displayed after his death or the site of the Moree Baths and Swimming Pool Complex, where Indigenous activist Charles Perkins protested during the 1965 Freedom Rides.
“The plaques will be linked to a digital interface, allowing access to the detailed stories behind them.
“They will form part of a Blue Plaque NSW network, supporting tourism and economic activity, particularly in country NSW.”
To be eligible for a Blue Plaque, the place must:
- be in NSW;
- have an interesting story to tell about people or events that have an important;
- strong or special relationship to the place; and
- be visible to the public.
Nominations must be submitted to Mr Marshall by 5pm Friday, 15 October, and can be sent by emailing northerntablelands@parliament.nsw.gov.au
