TODAY marks the start of the State’s 63rd Education Week and local MP Adam Marshall is urging local communities to get involved.

“It’s easy to view education as merely a series of obligations and it is similarly easy to forget that in our schools we lay down the bedrock of our society,” Mr Marshall said.

“This year’s Education Week theme, ‘Shared stories, better learning, stronger communities’, acknowledges the important role public schools play in fostering relationships between students, staff and the community.”

Mr Marshall urged parents to get involved in their children’s education.

“I encourage everyone to take part in Education Week activities, to visit open classrooms and see first-hand the excellent work being done in our local public schools,” he said.

In this year’s State budget, the NSW Government will invest a record $15.7 billion in education. This includes:

• $123 million in additional needs-based funding to support public school students, made possible by NSW being the first state to sign the Gonski agreement;
• $38 million for the Quality Teaching, Successful Students initiative, enabling more than 1,000 of our best teachers to mentor and coach other teachers to improve student results in primary schools;
• $50 million for the Supported Students, Successful Students program, expanding wellbeing services in schools; and
• $46 million to improve internet connectivity and speeds at country schools.

Mr Marshall said the State Government’s continued record investment in education highlighted its commitment to public schools.

“A key goal of the government goal is to improve student results,” he said.

“To achieve that we’re delivering the best future-focused learning environments for our children to succeed, especially in country schools.”
