A HOT cup of tea and the chance to learn new skills are being served up to Uralla and Walcha Seniors next month, with Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall announcing a $1,000 State Government grant today to support the Uralla Neighbourhood Centre’s Seniors Week High Tea.
Mr Marshall said the grant would allow Uralla Neighbourhood Centre to cover some of the costs associated with its Seniors Week program, which encourages seniors to be healthier, safer and more energy efficient.
“If there is one thing which is guaranteed to bring seniors together and get them talking it’s a big morning tea,” Mr Marshall said.
“This NSW Seniors Week, volunteers from Uralla Neighbourhood Centre are hosting a COVIDSafe High Tea to promote the support services the organisation offers, like the all-important Food Hamper, and cooking and gardening classes.
“On the day local Fire & Rescue members will deliver a talk on the need to have a working fire alarm installed in the home, while ZNet Uralla will provide cheap energy efficient ways to keep warm as we head into winter.
“Getting old can be tough, especially if you live alone, but this High Tea will showcase all the opportunities that are out there for seniors to connect, learn new skills and be social.
“On behalf of the Uralla and Walcha communities, I thank the Neighbourhood Centre for hosting this event and for helping to improve the quality of life of older locals.”
Uralla Neighbourhood Centre Chairperson and Pantry Co-ordinator Catherine Gallagher said she was thrilled to receive the grant, which will enable the organisation to invite seniors and their families to a special High Tea.
“The Neighbourhood Centre is the hub of our small vibrant village of Uralla, now is the time to encourage older citizens to learn new skills and make new friends,’ Ms Gallagher said.
“With Uralla CWA assisting with High Tea, we will showcase our pantry, Garden Project and Kitchen garden and share information on how we, and other organisations, can assist families in Uralla.
“Our Seniors Week activities will run from April 14 to 30.
“Local tutors will present courses such as Cooking for One, Success with Veggies in Pots, Starting with Backyard Chickens and Sourdough for Seniors.
“It is our hope new hobbies might be discovered and friendships made.”
