STUDENTS at Glen Innes High School can now walk in and out of their school with extra confidence, after a second set of school zone flashing lights was recently installed to remind motorists of reduced speed limits.
Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall recently inspected the lights on Oxford Street, at the rear of the high school campus, with Deputy Principal Shelly Way. He said the new lights would greatly improve safety at the front and the rear of the school for its 500 students.
“Glen Innes High School backs onto a quieter residential street and despite being a major access point for students and staff each day, many motorists may not have been aware they were entering a school zone,” Mr Marshall said.
“These flashing lights are highly visible and will ensure that local motorists slow down and the safety of students greatly increased.”
From last year, all schools across the Northern Tablelands have at least one set of flashing lights installed and now additional flashing lights are being installed at schools with busy side and rear entrances, upon request.
“These flashing lights have a ‘back to base’ connection to ensure they’re active only during school times, so drivers know that the 40km/h limit is active and necessary,” Mr Marshall said.
Mr Marshall said the flashing lights would work well in conjunction with other upgrades happening at Glen Innes High School.
“Glen Innes High School is seeing a complete renewal of the road to its rear and it’s about to embark on a huge $1.1 million capital works upgrade,” he said.
“The school foyer will be upgraded to be warmer and with better security, ramps will be built to accommodate students with disabilities and the playground and quadrangle will be renewed to improve recreation facilities.
“It’s an exciting time to be a high school student in Glen Innes.”
