WHEELS are up for Walcha’s youth with news today of an almost $1 million grant from the State Government to triple the size of the town’s existing skatepark and add a half-court basketball court, seating, shade shelters, drinking fountains and other facilities.

Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall was joined by Mayor Eric Noakes this morning for the exciting announcement, which he said would totally transform the space into an area for young people of all ages to hang out with their mates and have a good time.

“The skatepark is already a magnet for hundreds of young people in Walcha and surrounds and this upgrade and expansion has been much anticipated local youngsters,” Mr Marshall said.

“It will not just make the existing park larger, but include much for those on scooters, bikes and those wishing to shoot some hoops on the half court.

“The renewal will create a vibrant and welcoming space, including, an enclosed bowl with beginner to intermediate ramp heights, a half court, spectator terrace, seating and a scooter run.

“There will also be lots of extra undercover seating, water bubblers and CCTV cameras to keep everyone safe and ensure the new facility is not vandalised.

“This is a very exciting project and well done to Mayor Eric Noakes and Walcha Council for securing the funds.

“It is important our young people have an outdoor space of their own where they can meet safely, be active and hangout.

“The skatepark is an important social connection point for local teenagers and they deserve top-notch facilities.”

Walcha Mayor Eric Noakes said the community was grateful to receive the funding from the State Government.

“This will be great for the youth of our community and give them another safe place to be active and social,” Cr Noakes said.

“This project is part of council’s plans to get people of all ages in our community active and provide the best facilities for them to do that.

“We are very grateful fore this enormous grant and look forward to putting in to good use for the benefit of our community.”
