SPEED LIMIT CHANGES BEING MADE TO INVERELL SHIRE ROADS

NORTHERN Tablelands MP Adam Marshall and Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) is advising local motorists that changes will be made to some local speed limits in the Inverell Shire to improve safety for all road users.

Mr Marshall said speed limits in the Inverell Shire were reviewed in accordance with NSW Speed Zoning Guidelines and in consultation with council.

“The review assessed a number of factors including roadside development, urban growth, road alignment and crash statistics,” Mr Marshall said.

He said that on this Friday (8 May) new speed limit signs would be installed on Bundarra Road, Old Bundarra Road, Old Stannifer Road, Melica Road, Rifle Range Road and the Gwydir Highway.

“The existing speed limit of 60km/h on Bundarra Road at Inverell will be extended from the Gwydir Highway intersection to 200 metres south of Rifle Range Road,” he said.

“This follows requests to me and Inverell Shire Council by residents and representatives from the National Transport Museum to extend the 60km/h speed zone past this now busy intersection.”

Mr Marshall said the speed limit on Old Bundarra Road would also be changed.

“There were 11 crashes on this stretch of road in the five years to 31 March 2014 resulting in two fatalities and nine injuries,” he said.

“The existing 100km/h speed limit will be reduced to 80km/h to extend the existing 80km/h zone. The 80km/h speed zone will start from 580 metres south of Harland Street and end 100 metres south of Leviatham Road.

“The existing 100km/h speed limit on Rifle Range Road at Inverell also will be reduced to 60km/h from Bundara Road to 800m east of Bundara Road.”

Mr Marshall said in Gilgai the speed limit would be changed on Old Stannifer Road and Melica Road.

“The existing 100km/h speed limit on Old Stannifer Road east of Wood Street will be reduced to 80km/h for 2.5 kilometres,” he said. “A 50km/h speed limit will be introduced on Melica Close from the intersection of Old Stannifer Road to 380 metres south.

“At Delungra the existing 60km/h speed limit on the Gwydir Highway just east of Coolatai Street to just west of Reedy Street will be reduced to 50km/h.

“The existing 60km/h speed limit on Delungra Ashford Road from about 300 metres south of the Gwydir Highway to about 560 metres north of the Gwydir Highway will be reduced to 50km/h.

“A 50km/h speed limit will then apply to all roads in the village of Delungra to improve pedestrian and motorists’ safety.”

Mr Marshall said that once the new signs were installed the new speed limits would be enforceable.

“Road users are reminded to slow down ahead of the changes and be vigilant of new speed limits,” he said.
