WALCHA Golf Club will play host the inaugural Women’s World Sand Green Golf Championships early next year, it’s been announced.

Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall and Golf NSW CEO Stuart Fraser joined Walcha Golf Club President Allan Green and Walcha Mayor Eric Noakes for the unprecedented announcement last Friday on the course which will make history in April 2024.

“It’s a ‘red-letter day’ for the Walcha community and the sport of golf in our region,” Mr Marshall said.

“This is a massive coup for the club, bringing more than 100 of the world’s best female professional golfers to Walcha for three days of golf – the last of which will be televised live across the globe.

“Winning the right to host these championships is not only a huge win for the club, but also recognition and reward for many years of hard work by the volunteers to make Walcha the premier sand green golf course anywhere in NSW.”

Mr Marshall said the championships would attract lots of interest from professionals with a minimum prize purse of $140,000 on offer for the world event.

“It’s so exciting for our region to think we’ll be seeing the world’s best female golfers in person, right here in our own backyard,” Mr Marshall said.

“Playing on sand greens will also be a very different challenge, especially for the overseas professionals, which will add another point of interest for spectators.

“Hearty congratulations to Walcha Golf Club President Allan Green, Secretary Jenny Lisle and all the committee on winning the hosting rights – this is a huge day for Walcha, which will have three days on the world stage.”

The inaugural Women’s World Sand Green Championships will be held on 9, 10 and 11 April 2024.
