YOUNG COUNTRY ARTISTS INVITED TO APPLY FOR $10,000 SCHOLARSHIPS

YOUNG artists in the Northern Tablelands are being encouraged to apply for nine $10,000 scholarships under a major new State Government scheme to develop emerging artistic talent, Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall announced today.

Mr Marshall said he would love to see local talent benefiting from the scholarship program, which includes 100 scholarship grants available valued at $10,000 each for rural and regional artists over the next four years.

“This scholarship program helps our young regional artists aged between 18 and 25 develop their careers and connect with arts organisations and training opportunities,” Mr Marshall said.

“In August this year, Dundee-based artist Ashely Hansell was one of 16 artists in the state to receive an inaugural $10,000 scholarship and it has already made a huge impact on her life and future plans.

“Ashely operates her own small business designing and making clothing from recycled materials Spunkit Designs from home and this scholarship has allowed her to purchase new equipment, giving her the opportunity to expand her business opportunities.

“I encourage other young artists in the region to apply of this scholarship which will go a long way in helping to develop their talent and pursue their goals.”

Mr Marshall said the scholarships were available to fund activities including mentorships or internships, residencies, short-term courses and workshops, art related travel and the creation of new work.

“The Young Regional Artist Scholarships are all about fostering the next generation of arts professionals in country NSW,” Mr Marshall said.

“I’m proud of the investment the government is making to help young country artists nurture their skills and future careers.”

The first 16 inaugural scholarships were awarded in August, and applications are open until 1 February 2016 for the remaining nine for 2015/16.
